"Realness" in the Blogging World
2.08.2018

Something I've seen being talked about quite a bit lately is "realness" in the blogging and Instagram world. It seems like readers and followers (non-bloggers and influencers) are craving authenticity more and more these days, perhaps because we're so oversaturated with media and social media and expectations for what both we and our lives should look like. It's a tricky issue for sure! I've been thinking on this a bit, and thought I would share just a bit of my perspective. I honestly wrote down so many thoughts at first and then paired them down, because it was too much for one post. So, here are just a few thoughts (and maybe we can dive in more another time)...

I think there's a huge difference between being fake and showing your life in a beautiful way. I'm sure we all have some girls who come to mind (influencers or not) who we think of as fake. I've seen many a girl on Instagram or in the blogging world whose body looks so different in her photos versus in other people's photos, or who wasn't transparent about plastic surgery, or who simply doesn't share anything authentic about her life. It's frustrating, FOR SURE. But, I also think a lot of bloggers and Instagrammers are getting lumped into this simply because they post beautiful imagery. I feel strongly that just because someone only posts pretty images on their Instagram, doesn't mean that they're fake - it's just what they like to share in that space.

Something to ask yourself is if you think someone's posts are coming from a place of creativity or from a place of insecurity or bragging. There are some big bloggers I've unfollowed because it rubbed me the wrong way when they overedited their photos or wore crazy amounts of makeup. These accounts made me feel bitter, and I don't want that negative energy!

In the end, I think we should just follow people who make us feel good, and who inspire us. For me that's a whole mixture of folks. I love following my friends who don't give an F about a curated Instagram grid. I love following fashion and lifestyle bloggers and home decor accounts that give me so much inspiration about how I want to dress and decorate and entertain. I love following travel accounts so I can dream of future vacations. All are okay!

For me personally, I love photography and am even a photographer now. I also love experimenting with photo editing (not crazy Photoshopping - I'm talking tones, white balance, brightness, depth, etc.). I feel SO inspired by producing creative content, and I always want to be proud to share it with you guys. I wouldn't feel inspired to share a dimly lit photo of my messy living room here on my blog when I'm talking about home decor or something. There's nothing inspiring about that! But, there are other ways that I can share my realness. I'm always real with you in what I write here! Instagram Stories are a great sneak peek into someone's life (you've seen me on there sick, with bad hormonal breakouts, and cooking in my ugly 90's kitchen and more 😜). And Twitter is probably my favorite social media channel because everyone is just themselves.

In closing... Bloggers and influencers, I ask that you show your real selves. Don't stop producing beautiful content, but make sure it's relevant to others and still ties in with your actual life. Show us your personality, tell us when you've had a bad day, and complain when you have a bad zit. To those who read blogs and follow influencers on Instagram, I ask that you only follow people who make you happy and provide positive inspiration for you. Don't hate-follow someone so you can roll your eyes at their fakeness. Also, please don't assume we're all like that. There are many of us that are super real (as dorky as I am), and would love to build that trust with you. Trust that even if we post pretty pictures, we are still real people and are making efforts to let you into our lives.

Sivan Ayla (blog, Instagram)
So naturally beautiful, super real on IG stories, and always has great blog posts. I always wish I could be her friend because she's the coolest!

Ashley Guyatt (blog, Instagram)
We've become blogging friends over the years and she's such a genuine, kind person. Her style and LA photos are to-die-for and I'm always checking her Instagram for new photos!

Emily Vartanian (blog, Instagram)
Emily is always real on Instagram stories, and also writes about some amazing topics on her blog!

Mary-Katherine Minnis (blog, Instagram)
She's one of my oldest blogging friends, and is the most selfless gal ever! She is now a travel blogger, and I'm always inspired by her travels and her style.

My Current Color Obsession

Summer-to-Fall transition outfit
cute bell sleeve top
This week I realized how into red I am lately! This cracks me up because red used to be my least favorite color. Yep, literally at the very bottom of my list. Maybe it's the transition to fall, or the contrast against my blonder hair, but I just can't get enough these days!

I absolutely love this little bell-sleeve top (the perfect muted red 👌), and you'll never guess where it's from! It's also on sale for 15 freaking dollars right now, which I cannot wrap my mind around. Scoop it up now!

Have you by chance seen the Shopbop re-brand? I looovvve their new logo, and the look of their site. So chic. They also have an amazing promotion for their app right now... You can take 15% off full priced items on your first Shopbop purchase using the Shopbop app and code APP15!

Hey gals! I hope your week is off to a great start. After a really fun Sunday in KC (our first MLS soccer game!) and a late drive back home, I'm still recuperating a bit. Turns out I can't function well off of 4 hours of sleep like I used to 😅

So I feel like this top and this photo location are giving total vacation vibes and I wish that were actually the case! Turns out this is just a random tree in front of a vacant building in my little Missouri town lol. But I love this little top! I'm not typically a strapless fan, but I saw this on megababe Sivan Ayla (honestly looks significantly better on her gorgeous tan skin!) and knew I wanted it for Mizzou games! The first couple of football games are usually hot as balllllz so I knew this top would be perfect! It was my first time ordering from Vici, but they always have a ton of cute stuff I keep my eye on.

5 Podcasts I Can't Get Enough of + My $23 Bodysuit
7.23.2017

bodysuit + cutoffs
stripe bodysuit with cutoff shorts

So I'm fairly new to the podcast world, but seriously can't get enough! I'm seriously such a podcast junky all of a sudden! I listen to them while I drive, while I shower, while I do my hair and makeup, and even when I cook and clean the kitchen. I used to get so bored and sleepy on a longer drive, but now I just download some podcasts and go! I love keeping my mind engaged or even just getting in a good laugh while I do otherwise mundane tasks of life.

While I now listen to a lot of podcasts and have a huge list on my phone of more pods I want to try, read on for 5 I can't get enough of right now!

ASOS stripe bodysuit, $23

1 | The Ladygang
I had to include this because it's the first podcast I really got into and listened to weekly (beyond Serial season 1)! It's basically fun + hilarious girl chat with 3 LA ladies (Becca Tobin, Jac Vanek, and Keltie Knight), and they interview various celebs and experts. Over a year later, I still look forward to listening every Tuesday when a new episode comes out. It's so fun to listen to, and over a year in I feel like they're my friends!

2 | How I Built This
How I Built This is a new-to-me pod (from NPR) that interviews successful entrepreneurs about their now huge businesses, and of course... how they built them. I've never been the most business-minded, but am truly so intrigued and inspired by these stories! This podcast launched last September, so fortunately I have a lot of episodes I'm going back and listening to, but so far my favorites have been Kendra Scott, Dermalogica, and Kate Spade. Thank you to my friend Mary-Katherine for recommending this one to me!

3 | The Skinny Confidential Him & Her Podcast
I've read The Skinny Confidential and followed Lauryn for years, and now love her podcast that she does with her husband Michael! They're hilarious, and no topic is off limits. They have lots of guests, and discuss a great mixture of advice for business, relationships, entrepreneurship, beauty and health. It's reallentertaining, but educational too!

4 | Almost 30
I'm new to this podcast as well and am currently binge-listening to a million past episodes! looooove the hosts Krista and Lindsey. I swear I'm interested in all the same things they are (and am a bit of a hippie at heart), and just enjoy hearing about their lives, as well as the unique and inspiring guests they bring on. These girls are funny and real and chill.👌

5 | The Bachelor/Bachelorette Party
This podcast is part of the Channel 33 podcast network (started by my favorite sports writer Bill Simmons), and is seriously so fun if you watch any of The Bachelor franchise! The host, Juliet Litman is funny and insightful, and really dives into each episode with different guests each episode (including Ben Higgins and Nick Viall). Trey and I love watching the franchise for the entertainment value, and this podcast is really entertaining as well! The only downside is that you have to subscribe to all of the Channel 33 pods (at least I haven't figured out a work-around), so I just delete the other podcasts I don't want to listen to.

off-the-shoulder bodysuit
off-the-shoulder + cutoffs
Shorts (also love this brand)  |  Bodysuit (under $25!)  |  Slide Sandals  |  Sunglasses  |  Necklaces  |  Similar Bags

What are some podcasts you can't get enough of lately?? I seriously listen to quite the lengthy list, so I'll have to do another post soon of other podcasts I love!

I also can't wrap up this post without talking about my new favorite bodysuit, which is under $25! It's so stinkin cute + perfect for the summer heat. Bodysuits are so so easy paired with some denim cutoffs (my favorite brands here & here), and this was the perfect outfit for a day of fun sightseeing / drinking around Nashville last week!

On a totally different note... Trey and I are headed up to Chicago today for a quick overnight anniversary/concert trip! We're seeing J.Cole (our 3rd time!) and Anderson Paak tonight (so. damn. excited.), and also squeezing in some sightseeing! Our wedding anniversary is Wednesday, so I'm glad we get to sneak away just the two of us, even if it's just for a night :)

5 Things I'd Tell My Younger Self
6.29.2017

minimal summer outfit: tank, jeans, slides, hat

While I've always been fairly "successful" and put-together for my age, I've still made my fair share of stupid choices and grown from a lot of learning experiences over the years. Over the past few years I've worked through not regretting anything, and simply learning from my mistakes and experiences - whether serious or silly. If you live with the perspective that everything happens for a reason and should be grown from as a result, it will truly improve your life!

Since these are some things I've reflected on over the years, and found myself chatting about with my friends, I thought I would share them here! I think it's such an interesting conversation topic :)

If the guy you're dating isn't marriage material, don't waste your time.
You've probably heard this advice repeatedly from your parents, but maybe it will sound different coming from me ;) Even if marriage isn't on your radar right now (or ever!), why would you invest yourself and your time in someone who is immature and would not make a good husband or dad? I wish I could answer why I wasted time on stupid boys.

Step away from the tanning bed sista.
I straight up cringe when I think about baking myself in a tanning bed. Nothing ages you faster, not to mention the highly increased risks of skin cancer! After my mom had several cancerous cells removed (and as a result received several scars), it really opened my eyes that I wasn't invincible, and that it wasn't worth it. I'm already thanking myself for quitting a few years back, and know I will even more down the road!

Don't weigh yourself everyday or count every calorie.
Instead focus on clean eating, healthy portions, and nourishing your body.
I first have to include the disclaimer that these practices are helpful to a lot of people. However, they were extremely harmful to me. I succumbed to disordered eating off and on in high school and college. I was obsessed with being bone thin and would only eat very low calorie foods. I wrote down every calorie I consumed (starting at 15 years old! 😢) and analyzed each night. I obsessed over my calorie counts and mentally beat myself up if I went over my limit by even a couple hundred calories. Unfortunately when I went through this in high school I was dancing 5+ days a week and my strength and overall ability declined, and I stopped having my period for over a year (which messed me up for many years afterward). I'm thankful that one of my dance teachers and one of my best friends noticed what was going on and helped me through it.

To avoid those negative and unhealthy thoughts (which I still struggle with sometimes), I now turn my focus on clean eating, nourishing my body, and healthy portions. If you're someone who fixates, find some healthy goals to fixate on. I actually don't ever weigh myself anymore and instead evaluate where I'm at based on how I look in the mirror, how my clothes fit, and most importantly - how I feel. Sometimes I even ask nurses not to tell me my weight because it's just healthier for me mentally if I don't know. I now try to workout for muscle tone and health rather than "to get skinny" just because it's a much more positive way to approach things.

In summary... Love yourself and take care of your mind, body and soul :)

Explore LOTS of careers while in high school and college.
I can't even tell you how many interesting careers I've learned about as a working adult that I would have been so interested in when I was younger. While I mostly enjoy my work in communications and PR, if I could go back in time I would explore the nutrition and dermatology fields. My advice:
- Think about things you're interested in, and research all of the careers that tie into those interests
- Take personal strength and career strength tests (there are both free and paid ones) to narrow down fields you may excel in, then explore from there!
- Think about what intrinsically motivates you, and what grinds your gears. What jobs include tasks you hate, and what fields encompass principles that motivate you?
- Do lots of job shadowing, and don't be afraid to simply email or call someone to ask questions either!

Have more fun!
I was always so school and career motivated, and while that's ultimately served me very very well over the years, I often look back on my college years and wish I had had a little more fun and stressed less! I wish I had spent more time with friends rather than studying and working constantly. Not that adult life isn't fun, because it's as fun as you make it, but definitely enjoy your younger years and take advantage of having fun with friends!

Did any of these resonate with you? And what pieces of advice would you give your younger self??

And just a quick note on my outfit... You've seen this tank on my Instagram a couple of times because it's already been such a summer staple for me! I love that it's simple and low maintenance for hot weather, but the tie details add a little somethin' somethin.' I also scored this amazing hat on sale for $19 (originally $48)! It has a high end look and feel, and I love the unique color (called 'cinnamon').

Ugh, I am so sleepy right now and a post title is just not coming to me 😂

In good news, I scored this cute little bodysuit from Forever 21 for only $13 and can definitely see myself wearing it all summer with some cutoff shorts! I'm also still so glad that I got these mom jeans (under $60!) because I love love love the fit. I definitely plan to buy them in another wash in the future.

Well... it's quite late and clearly not much is coming to mind to say. Trey is next to me on the couch fast asleep (I've never known someone who can fall asleep as fast!), and the pups are next to us curled up on their dog bed. Sooo I'm thinking it's time for all of us to go to bed! Maybe a few hours of sleep will restore my ability to write a semi-interesting blog post, or hell, even a sentence.

And, if the torrential rain ever stops here I promise I'll have lots more content coming your way ASAP!

I've always loved graphic tees (remember the days of digging through the Hollister sale shelves? 😂), but I love them more than ever lately! I like that they're a step above your average basic tee and can be worn so many different ways. I had to scoop up this Amuse Society tee a) because I thought it was adorable and they're one of my favorite brands, and b) because we're diehard Mizzou fans and I thought it would be adorable for football and basketball games next year. It's nearly sold out online, but I did find sizes here and here (where I ordered from).

I'm also wearing this mom jeans + heeled mules combo again (also worn here) because I just love them together. So weird but cool (in my opinion anyways 😜). For size reference, my jeans are the 30in inseam because I wanted them to be a bit cropped, and I'm wearing a size 26, so they're true to size. Mine are just a little bit relaxed while still fitting in the waist. This wash also comes in a non-distressed version!

Today I'm celebrating that the work week is nearly over, even though I'll have a meeting until 8 tonight and another crazy busy day tomorrow. But then it will be the weekend and I plan to not think about work if at all possible...and hopefully catch up on my overflowing blog inbox. I really try to do my best at balancing a full time PR job (which definitely ends up being more than 40 hours/week) and blogging, but sometimes there aren't enough hours in the day! Sometimes I feel really burnt out, but for the most part I am always pushing myself to work harder and get more done. I love this space, and it's my creative outlet and escape, so I'm so thankful for those of you who support me and my blog by reading my blog posts, following on social media, and clicking on links. I'd be lying if I said I didn't want to be a bigger blogger and have a lot more Instagram followers, but I have to remember to be grateful for the wonderful readers I do have, and I really am grateful for you! You definitely keep me going when I feel like I'm going crazy from stress and a demanding schedule 😊

I have been so much more inspired lately, and just love all the spring styles this year! I probably need to put the brakes on my online shopping, but it's all so good right now! haha. I admittedly struggle with winter styling, so I'm welcoming spring with open arms and fresh outfit ideas 😉

These high-waisted mom jeans are such a steal, and I'm obsessed with them! They're really high-waisted and come in a ton of different washes. I also immediately knew I needed this off-the-shoulder top because the tie details are perfection! I always love a top with some detail. These heeled mules are so cute and comfy, and they're under $30! I couldn't believe it. I love ordering trendy shoes from Target so that I can try out a trend without making an investment. And last but not least, I got these Le Specs 'Liar Liar' sunglasses last summer, and to my surprise  have worn them through all seasons! They're comfortable, just the right amount of unique/funky, and meet my oversized requirement. I've purchased every single pair of my sunglasses from Shopbop because they have an amazing selection and carry my three favorite brands (Le Specs, Quay, and Karen Walker)!

I hope you're having a great week! Trey and I both work for a school district and are off this week for spring break. We usually travel on school breaks, but decided to have a little staycation this time, and it's been so nice to catch up on things after being sick last week.
