All of My Favorite Things from 2018
1.03.2019

All of my favorite things of 2018
Happy 2019! Just want to quickly say how much I appreciate you being here!

I thought I would do a round-up of lots of my favorite things I discovered and purchased in 2018! I meant to do this sometime during that Christmas to New Years time warp, but I ended up taking time off from my laptop, which was glorious!

I'm inevitably forgetting to include something amazing, but here are some of my favorite things from last year...

MAKEUP

I have three of these, but my favorite color is "George"! It's a great everyday mauve-y nude. I love these because they're clean beauty, and they're not as drying as most liquid lipsticks.

I was always skeptical about setting sprays, but this spray made me a believer! Not only does it make my makeup last longer, but it makes it look better! It gives everything a smooth, glowy finish. It's amazing!

I love love love this palette! The colors are gorgeous and can all be mixed and combined with one another. I also find it to be super blendable and long-lasting.

This is another clean beauty product that I love! It sets makeup beautifully, and creates a really nice glow. I have the "brightening translucent" shade.

SKINCARE

With skincare you rarely see immediate results, but every single time I use this I wake up with smoother, more glowing skin. This is a holy grail for me for sure!

This is hands-down my favorite cleanser I've ever used, and it's affordable + non-toxic! It's perfect for sensitive skin, and great at removing makeup. Bonus: you can pick it up at Target.

This is so nourishing for your skin! And it helps to regenerate your skin, so if you have any scarring or hyperpigmentation, rosehip is a great oil for that! It's also noncomedogenic, so it won't clog your pores or cause acne.

I love this mask so much that I wrote an entire blog post about it! I use it as a mask and then a spot treatment every night and it really helps my blemishes to clear up more quickly.

This is pricey for a lip balm, but lasts forever and works SO well. I get super dry lips, especially in the colder months, and this is the best product I've found so far!

HAIR

Pantene Pro-V Charcoal Shampoo + Conditioner
I wrote a blog post featuring this duo over the summer, and they're still in my weekly rotation. I truly love them so much and nothing else makes my hair feel cleaner! You also can't beat the price point and pump-tops as well.

Kristin Ess Weightless Shine Leave-in Conditioner
I've been gradually trying products in Kristin Ess' product line (anyone else obsessed with her??), and have found a lot that I love, but this one is probably my favorite so far! I have very fine hair that gets really tangled, but this + my wet brush are a dream team after showering. I love that it really is weightless and doesn't leave my hair greasy at all.

Love Hair Volumizing Dry Shampoo
I just started using this a few weeks ago, but it's quickly taken over as my favorite dry shampoo so far! It soaks up oil at my roots, adds volume, and doesn't give me the nasty product buildup that so many aerosol dry shampoos do. I also love that it's organic and cruelty free!

OTHER BEAUTY/HYGIENE

I don't know why I waited so long to try these, because they really, really work! Not only do they look like you got a gel mani, but they last so much longer that your normal at-home nail polish! I've found that if I re-apply the top coat every couple of days that it lasts even longer.

Herbivore Coco Rose Body Polish
This was easily my favorite body product of 2018! While it is pricey, I feel it's 100% worth it because it makes your skin so much smoother and it's a clean beauty product! I've always had nasty bumps on the backs of my arms, and this is the first product that's ever helped. The packaging is also beautiful, so it makes for a lovely gift!

Schmidt's Natural Deodorant
One of my best changes in 2018 was switching to natural and aluminum deodorant! It was definitely an adjustment period, but now I'll never go back to conventional deodorant. I've tried a few brands, and so far my clear favorite is Schmidt's deodorants. I'm currently using the charcoal & magnesium one and it lasts alllll day for me (and through sweaty spin classes).

CLOTHING

Madewell Curvy High-Rise Skinny Jeans

I've said it before and I'll say it again... These are my favorite pair of jeans I've ever owned! They fit like a glove (no alterations needed in the waist 🙌) and they're super, super slimming. Madewell jeans are 100% worth the investment in my opinion!

Belen Cropped Turtleneck
This top hasn't made an appearance on the blog or my Instagram yet, but I just got it and am so obsessed! It's the perfect fit, super comfy and soft, and I can't wait to get it in white as well. This is a staple I foresee myself wearing countless times and styling countless ways.

Outdoor Voices Hudson Shorts
Hands-down the best workout shorts I've ever owned! They fit well, they're flattering, and they're high-waisted! I got the pink this summer in Austin, and will definitely be adding the black to my workout wardrobe this year. I love my other Outdoor Voices pieces as well!

My Teddy Jackets + Coats!
My very favorite teddy coat is now sold out so I can't link it for you girls, but I love my growing collection! They're warm but chic at the same time and I feel so much cuter in them than in traditional coats.

ACCESSORIES

ZeroUV Sunglasses

This year I discovered the affordable sunglasses brand ZeroUV and I don't think I bought anything else all year! This pair is definitely my most-worn pair of sunglasses to-date!

XO Hanalei Coin Necklace
This was my favorite necklace of the year, and the quality held up beautifully! It's the perfect delicate necklace to wear everyday and to layer with other necklaces.

Lack of Color Hat
I can't even tell you how long I've wanted a Lack of Color hat, and I finally got one this year! Their hats are fantastic quality and are so stinkin cute! I wear mine all the time and always get compliments on it.

ARANjewels Earrings
I discovered the ARANjewels Etsy shop through a blog reader, and ordered a couple of pairs of stud earrings to layer in my piercings, and they're amazing! I rarely take them out to shower, but they haven't tarnished at all and still look brand new months later. I definitely plan to order more jewelry from this shop this year!

WELLNESS

Thrive Market

Thrive Market has been a game-changer for me this year! Living in a smaller town in the Midwest I don't have easy access to a lot of healthy food brands, wellness products, and clean beauty. Through Thrive I've gotten to try so many amazing products, and they're shipped quickly to my doorstep! Some of my very favorite products that I order over and over again are Flackers, Primal Kitchen everything (especially their salad dressings), this collagen powder, and lots of amazing herbal teas.  I get lots of clean beauty and home products through there too. You can try it for free and get 25% off your order here! I can't recommend it enough.

Ritual Vitamins
I looked into these for months before finally biting the bullet, but I'm loving them so far! I love that my two capsules per day have a fresh, minty taste and focus on the main deficiencies most women have (no extra BS!). They aren't unpleasant to take like most vitamins are. Try them for $5 off here!

Vitruvi Essential Oils
I've tried several brands of essential oils, and so far Vitruvi oils have been my favorite! Their quality is excellent and I love their packaging (so chic). I have one of their diffusers on my wish list!

Article Sven Sofa

I've had my eye on this sofa for a few years now, and we finally purchased it this fall! It's beautiful, comfortable, high-quality, and was shipped to us very quickly. I'm so impressed!

Crate & Barrel Wine Glasses
I treated myself to a set of these red wine glasses this year, and have zero regrets. I think they're gorgeous!

Sweater Weather Playlist + a Nordstrom Giveaway

hot peppermint tea & a cute sweater are all you need this time of year

As much as I hate cold weather, and short, gloomy days, I'm trying my best to find the perks of this time of year! The holidays, hot tea, cozy sweaters, and a little more downtime snuggled at home watching tv, reading, and listening to music.

Because I'm 27 years old and still obsessed with making music mixes (some things haven't changed from my high school days spending hours on Limewire), I like to make playlists for each season. My Sweater Weather playlist just feels like the right vibe at the moment. I hope you love it!

My Fall Nighttime Routine
11.13.2018

My Fall Nighttime Routine and favorite moisturizing cream

I love a routine and any ritual that makes my day more pleasant and calm. My morning and nighttime routines change up a bit throughout the year and depending on my schedule, but lately I have a calming fall nighttime routine I thought I would share with you today! Keep in mind this usually takes place after a busy night of dinner, clean-up, [sometimes] workout, shower, and a few hours of work on my laptop (either blog work or photo editing), so I need these little rituals to help me slow down at the end of the night.

Drinking a cup of hot tea
I try to do this year-round, but I especially crave my evening cup of hot tea in the fall and winter. I usually drink peppermint tea later in the evening and/or before bed because it’s really relaxing and promotes healthy digestion. This one is my favorite!

Doing my skincare routine
I love doing my nighttime skincare routine and find it so relaxing! At night I always apply a good moisturizer + oil at the end of my skincare routine so my skin gets re-hydrated overnight. This fall I’ve been using Olay Regenerist Whip Fragrance-Free and my skin is loving it! I wake up dewy, but not oily or greasy due to the lightweight texture, and it makes my skin so soft and smooth. You girls know how sensitive my skin is, so I was so excited when Olay released a fragrance-free version of the Regenerist Whip. It’s definitely lived up to the hype and my skin is glowing now more than ever! And I love that I can pick it up at Walgreens whenever I need to restock it.

calming nighttime routine essentials

Diffusing essential oils
I keep an essential oil diffuser in our bedroom and love to diffuse oils before we got to bed and while we sleep. Not only do they give off a lovely aroma and create a calming atmosphere in our bedroom, but essential oils have many health & wellness benefits too. Most of the year my go-to is lavender oil because it calms you and promotes good sleep (and lavender is one of my favorite scents)! Lately I’ve also been diffusing lots of Thieves oil because it is great for the immune system and has a really nice fall/winter scent to it.

Drifting off to a show
I know a lot of wellness experts say not to have a TV in the bedroom, but Trey and I love to watch a show in bed as we fall asleep. I think this is one of those things that’s different for everyone! We personally find it super relaxing and usually throw on an episode of Friends, The Office, or That 70’s Show.

How to Break Out of a Bad Mood
9.21.2018

How to wear a linen dress in the fall
Oversized cardigan over a dress

Sometimes I find myself in a straight up bad mood and I HATE feeling that way. Generally I think (and hope) I'm a pretty agreeable, cheerful person, but sometimes stress wears on me or PMS kicks my butt. Obviously no one wants to be around me when I'm grouchy, and I highly dislike myself for it too, so I try to break out of a bad mood as quickly as possible! Here are some tips I swear by:

Set Aside a Day or at Least an Evening for Yourself

With my busy schedule and ongoing guilt about downtime this is hard for me to do, but sometimes it’s just essential. Beyond sleep, our bodies and minds need time to simply rest. To just "be." A little self care and relaxation go a long way! If I’m having an anxiety-ridden day or week, I’ll try to set aside an evening where I don’t open my laptop and simply eat dinner, read or watch TV, put on a face mask, and just rest.

Schedule a Workout
When I’m grumpy, anxious or tired the last thing I want to do is workout. I usually want to curl up on my couch under a blanket and binge-watch TV. And while that’s definitely okay and even healthy to do sometimes (see above), most of the time I know I would be better off doing a workout first. Almost always once I’m working out the endorphins and sense of accomplishment kick in, and I feel SO much better about myself.

Don’t Hold it in

I’m definitely guilty of bottling up my stress and emotions because I don’t want to burden anyone...but then that can end up in an anxiety attack or tears later on. Not the best way to go about things! Sometimes we do need a little bit of outside encouragement or to just talk things out. This is when I talk to Trey or call my friend Jo or my mom.

Soak up Some Vitamin D and Fresh Air
Sometimes a sunny day can completely turn my week around, and I thrive off of Vitamin D (while also protecting my skin). Sometimes a quick walk or just sitting outside is super calming and positive. Often when I get super stressed at work I take a walk down the block and back while doing some deep breathing, and it helps me so much! Take a few minutes to let the sun warm your skin and take some deep breaths of fresh air, all while getting off of your phone for a bit!

Listen to Music or Podcast
Sometimes my “relax” playlist or a funny podcast episode are just the distractions I need to break out of a bad mood. Or heck, sometimes I need to blast some rap music through the house and dance like an idiot! Whatever it takes!

Eat Some Mood-Boosting Foods
Food can absolutely affect our moods and how we feel! Some amazing mood-boosting foods include nuts, fish, berries, leafy greens and colorful vegetables, and my favorite...dark chocolate!

3 Things I Swear by with a Busy Schedule
9.10.2018

Natori "Flora" Bra

Balancing a full-time job with my blog and a photography business makes life pretty chaotic at times, but it also keeps things exciting! I often get asked how I do it all, and it’s something I’m continually trying to figure out and get better at. What I do know at this point is that I try to be as efficient and organized as possible, which doesn’t come naturally to me. As I’m getting better at navigating it all, I thought I would share a few things I swear by with a busy schedule…

Natori "Flora" bra

The Right Undergarments
This may be an unexpected tip, but after years of hating and fussing with my undergarments, it’s a relief to finally have go-to pieces I can put on in the morning and not think about the rest of the day.

Working full time in PR and having two side hustles means I wear a lot of hats, but I try to do it all with grace. It’s important to me to feel good in what I’m wearing as I transition between roles and outfits throughout the day. When I purchased my first Natori bra last fall it was such a relief - I had finally found a bra that actually fit me. But beyond that, it was gorgeous and laid nicely under all of my clothing - no gapping, no bumps and lumps, no more ugly, plain designs. I was so excited that a few weeks later I bought one for my sister for Christmas! Now I’ve expanded my collection and I wear a Natori bra nearly every day. I have two of the Feathers design and also have the Flora (worn above), and love them equally (and they're so, so pretty). This makes getting dressed each day so much easier because I know my bra will be great under all of my outfits! Whether I’m at the office, taking blog photos or photographing a client, it’s nice to know my bra will take me through my entire day.

My Google Calendar
As much as I love my physical planner, I honestly couldn’t do all of this without my Google calendar (although I put it off for quite awhile). My work calendar is through Google, and now that I've moved everything else over I like that I can also have my personal calendar, work calendar, blog calendar and photography calendar combined in one place! I’ve found it’s the best way for me to keep track of everything because I always have my phone with me. Adopting this method has been key for efficiency and good planning!

The bra that works under everything

Meal Planning
I’m no wizard at this (I know there are people out there who have everything planned out for the week down to their Thursday afternoon snack), but I’ve found that putting in a little time on the weekend to plan our meals for the week not only saves me time each day, but also helps us eat healthier. For example, if I have a photo session after work one day, then I know I need to have a meal planned that’s extra quick and easy or to plan a slow cooker meal. For my breakfasts and lunches I keep my fridge and pantry stocked with smoothie ingredients, eggs, salad fixings, and other basics I can mix and match quickly to put together a meal (check out my ‘clean eating’ highlights tab on my Instagram to see some breakfast and lunch ideas).

I’ll do a dedicated post on this soon, but when meal planning I look at our schedules for the week, decide which nights I can realistically cook, and then plan a variety of meals from there. I like to do my meal planning and grocery shopping on Sundays for the most part so that I can enter a new week with a game plan and stocked fridge. Putting in a little time on the weekend makes my whole week run much, much smoother!

drugstore beauty favorites

Beauty Products [drugstore edition]

Witch hazel helps with acne and oiliness, is super soothing to sensitive skin, and is really refreshing + de-puffing. I love the subtle rose scent and use this toner both in the morning and at night! It's my new favorite skincare product!

I picked this up at the drugstore on a whim, but it's such a lovely product! It blends easily (I just use my finger tip), has a really pretty glow, and lasts all day! As much as I love doing a full eyeshadow look, sometimes it's nice to have a quick option that's equally pretty.

I've written about this before, but just picked it up again when I ran out of my beloved Brow Whiz by Anastasia of Beverly Hills, and it's SO GOOD. It really is a perfect dupe!

This is another drugstore product I've returned to, and it's my favorite summer foundation! It's lightweight but builds to full coverage and also doesn't get weird if you sweat. I buy the combination/oily version, but they also make one for dry skin!

Clean skincare products
pictured: sunglasses (on sale for $29), earrings, eye gel, face oil 1 & 2

I'm in shock that June has come and gone, but time flies when you're having fun! Without further ado, here are all of my favorite things from June...

Beauty Loves
This was the first face oil I tried starting back in the spring, and after months of using it, I truly believe in its magic. Crazily enough, my previously oily skin is so much more balanced now, and this oil helps to heal acne and redness as well. I also apply what's leftover on my hands onto my neck, and the texture of my skin has completely changed. Bonus points: Herbivore is a clean skincare brand, and this product is clean and cruelty free. I alternate it at night with the Acure oil below and also add a couple of drops to my morning moisturizer.
I discovered this skincare line through Thrive Market and couldn't be more obsessed. All of their products are squeaky clean - cruelty free, vegan, and free from parabens, sulfates, phthalate,  mineral oil and more. I'll be sharing my updated skincare routines soon, but definitely check out Acure in the meantime! I love using this $10 face oil as the last step in my nighttime routine for locking in tons of moisture. Also: argan and rosehip oils are non-comedgenic - meaning they won't clog your pores!
I ordered a sample of this eye gel from Biossance, and am loving it so far! It's also lasted me weeks already because a little goes a long way. I'm definitely noticing brighter undereyes, and love that it's lightweight, easy to blend, and perfect for wearing under makeup.
My friend Jo told me to get this $4 lip pencil, and I legitimately haven't used another lip liner or lipstick since! I use it to line then fill in my lips, then simply top with some lip balm. It's a beautiful nude color that makes your lips look plumper with a finished, yet natural look! As long as I top with a little lip balm it's not drying whatsoever either.

printed hair scarf with a ponytail
Accessory Obsessions
You've probably noticed that I'm fully embracing the hair scarf trend, and I love that they dress up your hair just a bit. I've never had great hair for wearing "up" but hair scarves help to elevate the look. I love these Free People ones because they have a built-in scrunchie that makes them really easy to wear (and they stay put!). You can wear them with a ponytail like above, or wrap them around a top knot. So cute!
I was so nervous to wear bigger hoop earrings, but these $10 hoops from the BaubleBar for Target collection have completely converted me! They've easily been my most-worn earrings this summer and I love that they're lightweight (they seriously don't hurt my ears at all). They also come in silver and rose gold!

3 Words that Describe Me

I recently read this post by Sivan Ayla about 3 words that describe her, and immediately wrote it down as a conversation topic for my friend Jo and I for our recent Texas road trip. It turned into such an interesting exercise that I wanted to share it with all of you!

At first it was difficult to think of words that described me (just like writing about yourself or writing your own resume is so freaking hard), but after asking Jo how she would describe me and paying attention to how I described myself in conversation, I ended up with a list I had to narrow down.

Obviously there is more to ALL of us than three words, but I loved getting down to the core of who I am.

Inspired.
For as long as I can remember I've been all about seeking inspiration. From saving photo albums of runway shows in high school (in the pre-Pinterest days) to hoarding magazines to soaking up different landscapes and architecture styles while traveling, I love to find inspiration everywhere and in everything. I'm also inspired by people I know and others I don't know, and I've always looked for beauty in my surroundings. When traveling I love to do lots of walking and tend to want to go-go-go so I can take in as much as possible at a new place. When I'm vibing and feeling inspired, I feel so much joy in life! Things are just...right. The periods of time when I'm running low on inspiration leave me feeling down. As a blogger and photographer, it's important for me to stay inspired, but beyond that, I feel so much personal fulfillment when I am! Seeking beauty and inspiration in the everyday and in the extraordinary truly propel me!

Empathetic.
Empathy has always been at the top of every strengths-finder test I've taken, so I figured it should make this list! I've always had a strong intuition about how people are feeling, and if they need comfort, encouragement, approval, etc. I feel I can read the vibe of a room or a conversation, and if things aren't going well I tend to jump in with some kind of statement that will ease tension or provide comfort or resolution. Growing up in a family of non-sensored, super assertive people, I was always putting this to the test! The issues of others have always weighed heavy on my heart, and for that reason I guard how much I watch or read the news. I also believe that diversity is our greatest strength, and that one person's talents, skills or knowledge can fill another's gaps. I love to figure out what other people's strengths and passions are so that I can better understand them! It's also important to me that people feel loved and encouraged, and I think that's why I secretly yearn for people to think of me as kind and caring. Being an empathetic person can be heavy at times, but I really try to put it to good use!

Open-minded.
While I definitely have strong opinions on things, overall I'm pretty open-minded. I like to hear all sides of an argument so that I can mull things over things before forming my own opinion (the INFP in me). I'm not a very stubborn person, which I think contributes to my open-mindedness. Like I mentioned above, I'm a strong believer in diversity (of all sorts) and am accepting of all walks of life. I believe there is a place for everyone! I think my open-mindedness also takes form in that I'm kind of up for anything. I'm open to switching plans, trying new foods, and seeing where the day takes us. The only cons I can think of to my being open-minded are that I can be quite indecisive (because I'm truly up for whatever), and that I can sometimes be a bit easily influenced by someone I look up to or trust or by an emotional plea (^^empathy). But at the end of the day I'm happy to be an accepting and receptive person.

I would love to know if you try this out, and what your three words are! Not only does it make for an interesting conversation with your significant other or a friend, but I think it's a great tool to be able to describe yourself so succinctly! Not only does it give you a sort of elevator pitch (or the foundation for one), but it's also quite peaceful to really know who you are.
