The Best Face Mask + Spot Treatment for Acne
11.28.2018

The best face mask & spot treatment for acne

I've been dying to share this magical skincare product with you guys because it is seriously transforming my skin (and no, this isn't sponsored or gifted)! A couple of months ago my sister told me about the LEROSETT clay mask by Gunilla of Sweden, and I ordered it that day. Now I'm on my second tube because it really is that good and I use it every single day!

So you know acne has unfortunately been my companion for many years, and I'm constantly looking for ways to clear it up holistically through nutrition, skincare, supplements and more. Most topical products don't do much for me, but this is one that I saw a difference from in just a couple of days.

How it works...
LEROSETT is a mineral-rich ionic clay, which is literally magnetic. According to Gunilla of Sweden's website, when activated by water, the clay particles "act as a (- charged) magnet to pull (+ charged) pimple-causing impurities (like oil, and dead skin cells) and toxins onto the clay particle and out of your skin." And...  the high levels of zinc and other minerals help minimize oil production and aid in healing damaged skin.

As a mask...
If you have active breakouts, they recommend applying a very thin layer of the mask allover both morning and night and leaving it on until it dries (usually only about 5-10 minutes for me). As your skin starts to clear over time, you can experiment with cutting back a bit. To this day I still use it every night after taking off my makeup and washing my face, and I use it some mornings as-needed.

As a spot treatment...
I use this as a spot treatment on any active pimples every single night and without fail, I always see a huge improvement by the morning! I find that if a pimple does come to the surface, using this spot treatment will speed up its life cycle and make it go away so much faster (I'm talking like half the time if not even less). It's be far the most effective spot treatment I've ever used!

Needless to say I owe my sister BIG TIME for telling me to order this! It's been my best kept secret lately, but I had to share with you guys. Have I sold you on it yet??

My Fall Nighttime Routine
11.13.2018

My Fall Nighttime Routine and favorite moisturizing cream

I love a routine and any ritual that makes my day more pleasant and calm. My morning and nighttime routines change up a bit throughout the year and depending on my schedule, but lately I have a calming fall nighttime routine I thought I would share with you today! Keep in mind this usually takes place after a busy night of dinner, clean-up, [sometimes] workout, shower, and a few hours of work on my laptop (either blog work or photo editing), so I need these little rituals to help me slow down at the end of the night.

Drinking a cup of hot tea
I try to do this year-round, but I especially crave my evening cup of hot tea in the fall and winter. I usually drink peppermint tea later in the evening and/or before bed because it’s really relaxing and promotes healthy digestion. This one is my favorite!

calming nighttime rituals // @OlayUS Regenerist Whip Fragrance-Free

Doing my skincare routine
I love doing my nighttime skincare routine and find it so relaxing! At night I always apply a good moisturizer + oil at the end of my skincare routine so my skin gets re-hydrated overnight. This fall I’ve been using Olay Regenerist Whip Fragrance-Free and my skin is loving it! I wake up dewy, but not oily or greasy due to the lightweight texture, and it makes my skin so soft and smooth. You girls know how sensitive my skin is, so I was so excited when Olay released a fragrance-free version of the Regenerist Whip. It’s definitely lived up to the hype and my skin is glowing now more than ever! And I love that I can pick it up at Walgreens whenever I need to restock it.

calming nighttime routine essentials

Diffusing essential oils
I keep an essential oil diffuser in our bedroom and love to diffuse oils before we got to bed and while we sleep. Not only do they give off a lovely aroma and create a calming atmosphere in our bedroom, but essential oils have many health & wellness benefits too. Most of the year my go-to is lavender oil because it calms you and promotes good sleep (and lavender is one of my favorite scents)! Lately I’ve also been diffusing lots of Thieves oil because it is great for the immune system and has a really nice fall/winter scent to it.

Drifting off to a show
I know a lot of wellness experts say not to have a TV in the bedroom, but Trey and I love to watch a show in bed as we fall asleep. I think this is one of those things that’s different for everyone! We personally find it super relaxing and usually throw on an episode of Friends, The Office, or That 70’s Show.

The Surprising Factor that Kills or Boosts our Confidence
10.23.2018

The Surprising Factor that Kills or Boosts our Confidence
messy waves, cool-toned blonde hair with roots

I feel like there's not much worse for the confidence than a bad hair day, am I right?? My hair is super fine, so my bad hair days tend to be when my hair is flat and lifeless. This makes me feel so gross! I end up fussing with my hair all day and wondering if I should just chop it off! Turns out you guys absolutely hate bad hair days too. This is what some of you girls had to say about how a bad hair day makes you feel:

"Ugly"
"Fidgety, like I can't stop playing with my hair"
"Low self esteem"
"Gross"
"Less confident, worried about how I'm being presented, messy. Even if everything else is good."
"Vulnerable, self-conscious, less outgoing"
"Frustrated and frumpy"
"Like I want to go home and bury myself in bed"
"A little discouraged. Like I already know the day will suck."
"It plays with my confidence"

WOW. Can you believe the impact a bad hair day has on our confidence??

According to a survey by Yale University, only 1 in 10 women experience a great hair day regularly.

That means our hair is affecting our confidence all the timeI hate that so many of us feel this way so often.

how to get more volume with fine hair
Pantene Sheer Volume Shampoo and Conditioner - give you volume, but also shine

When Pantene reached out about joining their 14 Day Challenge, I was anxious and excited to see if I would have more great hair days! I used their Hair Advisor guide to pick the best shampoo and conditioner for my hair needs, and went with the Sheer Volume Shampoo and Conditioner to give my fine hair a boost. I used it for every wash over the course of two weeks, and definitely saw some positive changes. My hair held volume and curl way longer than it had been before! My styling lasted all day, rather than fading by the afternoon. This was a game changer for me because I'm used to my hair falling flat and feeling gross within a few hours! Somehow, even with more volume, my hair was smoother and softer than usual too.

Overall, I definitely had more good and great hair days overall, which was an amazing feeling! I felt more confident, more attractive, and I didn't go through my day just wanting to throw my hair in a messy bun. And guess what, I'm not the only one who feels SO much better when I have a good hair day! Here's how they make YOU feel:

"Empowered! Ready to take on the day."
"Unique"
"The best and like I can conquer the world!"
"Put together"
"The day is going to be good!"
"Happy and positive"

"LIKE I CAN DO ANYTHING"
"Like I won the hair lottery, swishy and comfortable, more confident"
"Like a kweeeeeeeenn"
"Like I want to see everyone I know and catch up!"
"It is a mood booster"
"Like I can do anything. But really it just makes me like my hair more and not want to chop it off."
"HAPPY"

rooted cool blonde hair

Isn't it amazing to see the difference?? Our hair really plays a huge role in our confidence, our happiness, and how social we want to be!

I want all of us to feel this way more often! I encourage you to check out Pantene's 14 Day Challenge to find the right shampoo and conditioner for you so you can have more great hair days too!

My Makeup Routine + Favorite Products
10.03.2018

This post is so long overdue, but I'm finally breaking down my makeup routine and favorite products for you! Most of these products I've used for quite some time (and many for years now), so believe me when I say I love these products and believe in them (also, none of these are gifted - they're all things I've purchased). In some categories I couldn't pick just one product, so I've shared everything I use.

Also, this is everything I use for a full face of makeup. There are many days where I leave out a few steps to get out the door quicker or to achieve a more "natural" look.

Okay...let's dive in!

Primer
I haven't always used a primer, but ever since discovering the magic that are Supergoop! SPF primers I'm hooked. I'm currently using this one, but have also used and loved this one. They both have an SPF of 40, and create a smooth surface to apply your makeup on. They're not cheap, but last for months and months (and don't break me out!).

Foundation(s)
I couldn't pick just one foundation to share with you, because there are a few I love and use for different looks! I've used the Revlon Colorstay foundation for well over a year now, and it's a great full-coverage foundation that isn't heavy or thick! It still feels lightweight but is very buildable, and it's matte without being crazy matte (ya know what I mean?). I recently purchased the Lawless "Woke Up Like This" Flawless Finish Foundation, and it's a great product too! It's full coverage (covers blemishes and hyper-pigmentation really well), but dewy, which is something I've never found before. It's also completely non-toxic! Unfortunately on its own it's a little too dewy for me for most days (oily skin is a bummer sometimes), BUT for the past several weeks I've been mixing it with my Revlon Colorstay foundation and creating my own perfect foundation! I also have to mention Estee Lauder Double Wear Foundation. I haven't bought it in awhile since I found such a great drugstore foundation, but it's still my all-time favorite foundation!

Application tip: I pump my foundation onto the back of my hand then apply in little dots all over my face. Then I use this brush to stipple it into my skin. This is the best application I've found for a natural, yet full coverage look!

Concealer
I've had very dark circles since I was a little kid, and they've always been a struggle to cover. Once I tried Tarte Shape Tape a couple of years ago there was no going back! It's the best I've found to cover dark circles, plain and simple. And a tube lasts me a long, long time! I used to apply it with a blending sponge, but now I just lightly blend it in with my ring fingers.

Setting Powder
I next use setting powder to set my "wet" makeup products before moving onto powder products. I've tried a few over the years without having a diehard favorite, but I've recently been using the Lawless "Seal the Deal" Loose Setting Powder and I love it! It's another non-toxic product and is free of talc, a harmful ingredient found in most setting powders. It has a really soft, natural finish! I use the color "brightening translucent."

Brows
Next I jump to eye makeup, and first up is my brows! This is probably my favorite part of my makeup routine because I've really embraced my thick brows, and feel like a defined brow can make your whole face! My all-time favorite brow pencil is the Anastasia of Beverly Hills Brow Whiz! It adds a lot of thickness, while still looking natural and staying put all day. As an alternative I will sometimes use the L'Oreal Brow Stylist Definer, which is a great dupe. It doesn't stay put quite as well, but I still love it! I'll use it when I'm out of my Brow Whiz or if I'm not doing a full face of makeup.

Eyeshadow
I don't wear eyeshadow every day, but I do love to play around with different colors! My all-time favorite palette is this one by Tarte! The colors somehow all blend with one another in a ton of combinations and are super flattering. I also love this Tarte palette, which is slightly cooler toned. If I'm in a hurry or don't feel like doing a full-blown eyeshadow look, I'll often swipe on a bit of my Becca highlighter or one of these cream eyeshadows with my ring finger to achieve a subtle glow on my eyelids.

Eyeliner
I don't wear eyeliner every day, but when I do I almost always wear liquid liner! I recently bought this liner by W3ll People (a clean makeup brand) and really like it, so I'm planning to stick with it for now! I've always just used drugstore eyeliners and have never had any issues or a reason to go high end in this category.

Mascara
I've found a drugstore primer + mascara combo that I haven't strayed from in over a year now! I use this primer on the front, then back, then front of my lashes, and then use this mascara! I apply on the front, then pull through the back, then do two more coats on the front. This mascara keeps my lashes nicely separated, while also adding length and volume! On the occasion that I want even more volume, I'll add a couple of coats of this mascara on top.

Application tip: applying my primer and mascara through the back of my lashes makes a huge difference! I learned this tip through Courtney of Bring Your Own Beauty.

Contour Bronzer
I'm on my second Benefit Hoola Bronzer, and I love how easy it is to contour with! It's matte and cool-toned, which recreates the look of a shadow or natural contour. The packaging could definitely be improved, but the product is so good that I deal with it (hah). I use this brush to lightly contour my cheekbones, and then use the thin brush it comes with to contour the sides of my nose.

Glow/Warmth Bronzer
This may be high maintenance, but I use a second bronzer to a) blend out my contour and b) add warmth and a bit of tan to my face! You may have seen on my Instagram Stories that I recently bought a new compact of MAC Mineralize Skinfinish in Global Glow to replace my old one that was 3.5 years old. Yes, you read that right - it lasts forever! I use this brush to dust it along my hairline, as well as to lightly blend out my contour.

Blush
I got a Tarte Amazonian Clay blush for free for my birthday in 2017 and haven't looked back. I now have two colors ("paaartay" and "exposed") that I rotate depending on the time of year, and I absolutely love them both! This is by far my favorite blush I've ever used.

Highlighter
My friends Jo and Brianna talked me into splurging on the Becca Pressed Highlighter about a year and a half ago and I'm so glad I did! Not only does it give you a beautiful, subtle glow, but a little goes a long way! I still have a ton of product left, so I feel like this was a good investment. I use the color "opal."

Setting Spray
I am a late adopter to setting sprays (as in the last few months), but am now a believer! I recently picked up the Mac Fix+ setting spray that several friends raved about to me, and it really does make a difference in my makeup! It helps my makeup to last longer and to have a nicer finish.

I hope you found this post helpful and found a few new products to try! I'd like to experiment with some mini tutorials on my IG Stories and IGTV channel - so let me know if you'd be interested in seeing something like that and if you have any specific requests!

How-to: Effortless, Messy Waves
9.27.2018

how to get effortless, messy waves

I love the look of messy, lived-in waves, and feel like it's kind of become my signature look! After years of experimenting and figuring out how to style my hair, I'm finally sharing one way I style my hair to get the effortless, messy waves I love!

tutorial: messy waves with a flat iron
How-to: Effortless, Messy Waves

I first apply a heat protectant spray all over, then comb or brush through my hair so that it's nice and smooth. Then I simply take a small section (between 1/2 in. to 1 in.), clamp my Panasonic Nanoe Flat Iron near the root and twist about 180 degrees! I pull gently down the strand of hair (holding the twist) until I reach the bottom inch or two, and then I release the iron. It takes a little bit of practice, but it becomes super easy and quick to do - I promise!

I always curl my front few pieces away from my face, but for the rest of my hair I alternate which direction I curl, which is key to the natural wavy look!

Then I simply finish up with some texturing taffy or pomade, a dry texture spray, and a quick mist of hair spray! I have super fine hair, so texturing products are key for me to get that messy, lived-in look. I don't like for my hair to look too perfect!

Panasonic Naneo flat iron
tutorial: messy waves with a flat iron

What I love about the Nanoe flat iron is that I get the messy look I love, but my hair is still smooth and shiny. It's not frizzy or damaged at all! The nanoe technology infuses moisture into the hair while you style it, rather than drying it out. Nanoe ions retain approximately 1,000 times more moisture than a regular negative ion and are so tiny that they can actually penetrate your hair and add moisture! So cool, right??

This iron is also great for waves because it's rounded and because the ceramic plates are super, super smooth. I'd always been hesitant to curl my hair with a flat iron because I don't want my hair to get caught or stretched out, but this one glides through my hair effortlessly.

Do you ever curl your hair with a flat iron? I love mixing this in with my other hair styles and feel it's the best for getting natural looking messy waves!

Sephora Favorites + Sale

Herbivore - clean, non-toxic skincare products

Today kicks off the Sephora Beauty Insider event, and since most stuff at Sephora is on the pricier side, I will definitely be taking advantage of my discount (even though I'm only on the 10% level). I thought I would share some of my personal favorite beauty favorites that are sold at Sephora, as well as what I'm buying from the sale and my [very] long wish list of things to try in the future!

MY MUST-HAVES

My current beauty obsession is the clean skincare brand Herbivore! Their Lapis oil has improved my skin more than I can even tell you. If you're acne and inflammation prone, this is a great oil for you. It's an investment for sure, but I've used mine 1-2 times a day every day since mid March and I'm just now starting to get low, so it does last awhile. I recently added their Prism Exfoliating Glow Potion to my routine, and over time it's supposed to help resurface your skin and get rid of hyperpigmentation and acne scarring (and I need lots of help in this department!).

The Supergoop! Unseen SPF + primer is what got me to start wearing SPF every day! It's truly amazing, and I love that it's a 2-in-1 product. I've this blush and this eyeshadow palette nearly every day this summer, and this pencil is the secret behind my brows!

Here are all of the products I use and love from Sephora:

WHAT'S ON MY WISH LIST

My Sephora wish list is so dang long, but maybe someday I'll get through it and try everything (haha)! I'm definitely ordering the Lawless foundation (a new, clean makeup brand!) during the sale, and am also thinking about getting either this Herbivore moisturizer or this oil to try.

Other items at the top of my wish list are this Phyto-Retinol Serum by Biossance (a natural alternative to retinol), and anything by The Ouai, but especially this wave spray.

Here is my full Sephora wish list (taken straight from my Favorites list on their site):

What are you planning to pick up from the sale?? I love to chat beauty products, so leave me a comment below!

Tips for Hydrated Summer Hair
8.15.2018

How to keep your hair hydrated in the summer

It can definitely be hard to keep your hair hydrated in the summer with all of the heat and sun exposure, especially if you color it! Ever since I've been blonde my hair has definitely been dryer overall, but I've been figuring out how to keep it hydrated, healthy and shiny regardless. I thought I would share a few tips that have worked well for me this summer!

Deep Condition Every 1-2 Weeks
My hair is definitely healthier when I remember to do a deep conditioning treatment every one or two weeks! I don't usually have the time or patience to do a full-blown mask outside of the shower, but I'll use a deep conditioner in the shower while I shave my legs and such to repair damage and hydrate my hair.

Tips for Hydrated Summer Hair

Incorporate Healthy Fats into your Diet
Since adding more healthy fats into my diet this summer I've seen a HUGE difference in my hair and skin! I aim to eat lots of salmon, avocados, eggs and almonds each week and cook with organic olive oil, avocado oil and ghee. I also started taking a fish oil supplement daily and that's helped too! My hair is healthy and growing, and my skin is definitely plumper (and glowing)!

Wear Your Hair Up a Few Days a Week
I used to heat style my hair pretty much every day, but now that I've realized the magic of top knots, I wear my hair up at least 3 days a week. I think it definitely helps to give my hair a break from my straightener and curling wand. Now I just need to get better at braiding!

Panasonic Nanoe Hair Dryer - infuses moisture into your hair as you dry it

Update Your Hair Dryer
I used to rarely use a hair dryer because they would dry out my hair so badly, but the past couple of months I've been using the Panasonic EH-NA65 Nanoe Hair Dryer and I cannot believe how smooth and hydrated it leaves my hair. This hair dryer uses nanoe technology to infuse moisture into your hair while you blow dry, rather than drying it out. It uses nanoe ions, which retain approximately 1,000 times more moisture than a regular negative ion, so as you blow dry your hair it becomes smoother, shinier and more hydrated. These nanoe ions are so tiny that they can actually penetrate your hair and add moisture! I thought it was too good to be true, but my hair is truly so soft and shiny after using this hair dryer!

I also love that it comes with three attachments: a diffuser for curly or wavy hair, a quick-dry nozzle for an extra fast blow dry, and a concentrated nozzle for sleek blow-outs (what I used above). I had only used a standard hair dryer before, so these attachments have been fun to play with and have helped me learn how to style my hair in new ways!

And you know what else is great about it? You can purchase your own Panasonic Nanoe Hair Dryer at my favorite store 🙌It's available in select Target stores and on Target.com

How I'm Going Longer Between Hair Washes
7.25.2018

How to wash your hair less often

I've always envied my friends who can go days and days between washing their hair. Since my hair is baby fine, I never thought that could be me. But over the past year, I've been training my hair and experimenting with products so that I can go longer between washes. I've finally found the perfect shampoo and conditioner to pull it off!

Enter Pantene's new Charcoal Collection Shampoo and Conditioner. As the name hints, it has activated charcoal, which draws impurities out of the hair. I don't know about you, but after a few consecutive days of dry shampoo + a sweaty workout I have lots of gritty buildup at my roots. Thanks to the activated charcoal, this shampoo gets rid of that buildup and makes my hair soft and shiny again. The new Pantene Charcoal Collection Shampoo and Conditioner also have antioxidants and pro-vitamin B5, which leave my hair refreshed, clean and smooth. By truly getting my hair clean when I wash it, I'm finding myself able to go 1-2 days longer between hair washes than I was, even a few months ago! Now I can plan my sweatier workouts around when I want to wash my hair, but I don't have to take the time to wash it on any other days. Pantene's Charcoal Collection Shampoo and Conditioner are also free of parabens, silicones and dyes. I'm excited to see more haircare lines moving in this direction!

Pantene Pro-V Charcoal Shampoo & Conditioner - purifies hair with activated charcoal
shampoo to use if you want to wash your hair less

Between working full time, running my blog and my photography business, volunteering on a campaign this summer, and still fitting in some spin classes and HIIT workouts, I'm finding my schedule packed to the brim. So the fact that I can spend a little less time washing and drying my hair throughout the week has truly been a sanity-saver this summer! Time savings + more great hair days = my dream situation.

I can't recommend this set to you enough, and if you decide to try it, definitely head to Target because if you buy both products in-store, you get a $5 gift card! I've never been mad about a Target gift card, I can tell you that much 😉

10 Foods to Eat for Healthy, Glowing Skin
7.16.2018

10 Foods to Eat for Healthy, Glowing Skin

I’m learning more and more that health and beauty really do come from the inside out. You can apply all of the best creams in the world, but if you aren’t taking care of yourself through nutrition and drinking water, those topical products will only go so far.

Our skin is our largest organ and reflects our gut and hormone health, as well as our stress levels. After struggling with acne for 13+ years and reaching a point of desperation, I finally made changes to my diet and lifestyle. These involved eating for hormone and blood sugar balance, prioritizing a healthy gut, and reducing my stress levels. Through all of these things and more I now have the best skin I’ve had in years (it’s not perfect, but it’s much improved), and I 100% believe that good skin is a result of healthy, strategic eating and life balance.

This is the kind of stuff I LOVE learning about and love passing along to you. If I was doing college over again I would 100% go to school for nutrition. Maybe it’s not too late - I don’t know! I just started reading the book Eat Beautiful by Wendy Rowe, which is all about nutrition for beauty (and sparked the idea for this blog post)! It’s a really enjoyable read with nutrition information, recipes, beauty tips, and beautiful imagery. While there are far more than 10 foods that are superstars for skin health, I thought I would start here and if you guys love this post then I would love to cover more in the future.

top knot with a bandana

Leafy greens
Yeah, we’ve heard it before, but they really are an essential in your diet! They’re full of vitamins and minerals including beta carotene and vitamin E, which help to repair our skin through cellular renewal. They’re loaded with Vitamin A, which not only helps limit the production of excess sebum (attention my fellow acne sufferers), but also helps the body to eliminate toxins. Greens are such a good source of beautification by supporting new cell growth, cell repair, and detoxification of the body (skin creams can’t do all of that). I put a cup of spinach in my smoothie every single morning, and try to get at least one more serving of leafy greens each day in the form of a side salad (usually kale, romaine, or another lettuce mixture).

Red bell peppers
Red bell peppers have twice the vitamin C as other bell peppers (100% of your daily recommended amount actually), and Vitamin C helps to boost collagen production. They’re a good source of B6 and fiber too. They’re also high in carotenoids, which are great for fighting acne, as well as preventing aging and increasing blood circulation. I like to have colorful bell peppers sliced up in my fridge each week to quickly grab for snacks, salads, stir fries and sheet pans of roasted veggies.

Avocado
They’re now trendy with millennials, but they used to be shamed for being high in fat. However, we can now rest assured that they’re full of healthy fats, which are essential for bodily functions, can help you lose weight, prevent skin aging and give your skin a beautiful glow. Monosaturated fatty acids actually work to keep the skin moist and healthy, and protect the skin against UV damage. These fatty acids also soothe symptoms of inflammation. Avocados are also rich in Vitamin E (skin restoration), fiber (healthy digestion), and antioxidants (protect against skin damage). I’m not someone who absolutely loves avocados (the texture is not my favorite), but I aim to eat 3 a week. My three favorite ways to eat them are: sliced with garlic salt and hot sauce, on top of Jilz gluten free crackers as an alternative to avocado toast, or as guacamole with raw vegetables.

Salmon
Salmon is high in omega-3 fatty acids, and is one of the best sources for them beyond taking a supplement (which I also do). Omega-3 fatty acids support a healthy heart, but also are great for our skin because they lower inflammation in the body, plump the skin, and boost collagen production and elasticity. Salmon is also a rich source of selenium, which repairs sun damage and helps control irregular pigmentation. The Vitamin D in salmon is good for steady blood sugar levels too (sugar spikes age the skin and can cause acne). I opt for wild-caught salmon when it’s available in order to get the most nutrients and the best taste.

Cilantro
Most herbs are good for skin and health in general, and since it’s green that means it’s packed with nutrients. Cilantro is a blood sugar stabilizer, which is helpful since blood sugar spikes can often lead to acne and other inflammation. Cilantro helps your body to produce digestive enzymes, which help healthy digestion and prevent gas and nausea that come from bad digestion. Why is this related to skin? A healthy gut = a healthy complexion. Cilantro also supports liver detoxification, and when our livers are working optimally to detox the body, those toxins won’t make their way to the skin.

Eggs
Eggs are a daily staple in my diet! I love that there are so many ways to cook them, and that they’re a complete source of protein in that they contain all 9 essential amino acids (the ones we can’t produce). Egg yolk is packed with vitamins A and D, which help with cell turnover in the skin, and egg whites repair and brighten the skin too. I buy organic or free range eggs as much as possible because they taste better, have higher levels of omega-3 fatty acids (good for skin!), don’t have creepy chemical additives, and come from happier, more ethically raised chickens.

Cucumber
I’ve been eating a lot of cucumbers this summer, and love how hydrating they are with a water content of 95%. Cucumbers reduce inflammation, eliminate toxins, and can help with digestive issues. According to Eat Beautiful, cucumbers “...help to flush the system like an internal cleanser, creating a less acidic environment in the gut.” They also have many skin-feeding vitamins and antioxidants, and are one of the best sources of silica, a mineral involved in collagen production. I love to eat cucumber slices with tuna salad, and also include them in a variety of salads.

Berries
Berries are a rich source of Vitamin C and antioxidants, which help your skin to fight the free radicals that age skin and destroy collagen. They’re high in vitamins, anti-inflammatory, and have a good amount of fiber, which aids the digestion and detoxification processes. Healthy digestion helps to clear the body of toxins, meaning they’ll leave the body before they show up in your skin! Just be sure to keep your serving sizes small because they do contain natural sugar (which is still processed by the body as...sugar, natural or not). I’ll either put cup of mixed berries in my morning smoothie, or eat cup at another time of the day, but try to limit to that in order to keep my blood sugar steady.

Garlic
Not only is garlic a delicious way to add flavor to your cooking, but it also has a number of health benefits, which all lead to better skin health. Garlic kills off harmful bacteria and viruses in the body, including Candida overgrowth in the gut (caused by overuse of antibiotics, poor diet or stress). These bad bacteria, fungi, etc. can cause a variety of health problems, including acne and other skin conditions. Garlic is rich in vitamin C, which supports the immune system and boosts circulation. It’s also rich in sulphur, which is essential for skin structure (it partners with collagen). I love to cook with fresh garlic cloves as much as possible and often saute my veggies in it, use it as part of pasta sauce, or make it part of a marinade for fish.

Dark chocolate
High quality, low sugar dark chocolate of at least 85% cocoa is packed with antioxidants, which help protect your skin from UV damage, and also repair your complexion. Dark chocolate is anti-inflammatory, and also prompts your body to release dopamine (your happiness and satisfaction hormone). I love to have a square or two most evenings after dinner and it neutralizes any sweets cravings.

Best SPF products to protect your skin from aging

I was recently listening to a Skinny Confidential Podcast episode and the guest, skincare expert Charlotte Cho, said "SPF is the best anti-aging cream you can buy." While I was already a big believer in protecting my skin, this simple line was a huge WOW moment for me.

As much as I love the sun, it's hella damaging for our skin. My mom had skin cancer removed from multiple locations while I was in college, and that was my wakeup call. I promised myself I would never step foot in a tanning bed again, and I would be sure to protect my skin when in the sun. Not only is skin cancer very much a reality, but the sun also speeds up the aging process. And I don't know about you, but I want to put off wrinkles and sun spots for as long as possible!

So, SPF it is! Here are some SPF products I love & use regularly...

EVERYDAY
I wear this every single day as my primer and face spf. It goes on lightweight and clear, and doesn't break me out. Since I've been wearing it, my face has never burnt, even on some long days outside. This has become one of my holy grail beauty products!

FACE + LIPS
Our lips very often get neglected and get a lot of sun damage. I highly recommend adding a lip balm with spf to your pool/beach bag! And make sure to wear it if you'll be hiking or spending lots of time outside for any other reason. This one by Coola goes on lightweight and it works really well for me!

This is a lightweight bb cream that's perfect for a slight glow-up at the beach, lake or pool. No one would know you're wearing a bit of makeup, but you can get an extra layer of spf while evening your skin tone slightly and creating a really pretty glow.

This is another great "no-makeup makeup" product for a beach day and it gives you a bronzy glow while offering up SPF20 protection.

I lost this and I'm so sad about it because it's an awesome product! It's a translucent powder with SPF50 protection, and it's so easy to dust on your face throughout a day in the sun. Bonus points: it helps with your oiliness too! Supergoop! came out with a similar product that I'm excited to try as well.

BODY
Yes, it's pricy. Yes, it works. And yes, it smells AMAZING. I love this stuff! It's protected my very fair skin without fail and Trey loves it too.

Save - Trader Joe's Zinc Oxide Mineral Sunscreen Spray (SPF35)
I picked this one up at Trader Joe's while on vacation and was instantly drawn to the $8 price tag, and that it has zinc oxide in it. I love zinc oxide because it's a natural sunblock. And as much as I love the Coola sunscreen, I probably can't sustain buying it every single time I need sunscreen, so this is a good budget friendly option!
