5 Simple Ways to Have a Healthier Day

Health is all about balance, and doesn’t mean you have to eat strictly salads and do an hour of cardio every day. I certainly don't do either of those! Health and wellness mean soooo much more. It’s a balancing act and sometimes you just have to start small, and make a series of positive choices. Here are 5 simple things I do and that you can do to have a healthier day today and every day!

Hydrate, first thing! As we sleep our bodies are working hard to digest food, regenerate cells, detox the body, and much more. So, when we wake up we’re actually dehydrated. I like to start my mornings by immediately hydrating! This gives me more energy and makes me feel so much better in the mornings! I used to feel terrible every morning - dizzy, exhausted, etc. After I go to the bathroom and take the dogs outside, I make a cup of hot lemon water or herbal tea, and also fill up my tumbler with ice water (often with a lemon slice and a pinch of Himalayan pink salt for electrolytes).

Go for a quick walk. To be honest, I don’t get in a ton of steps day to day. I work a desk job, and also work on my computer every night at home, so other than photoshoots and workouts I’m not moving tons by any means. So, I like to incorporate some quick walks when I can to stimulate my circulation, refresh my brain, and burn a few calories. Most days I don’t have time for a 30-60 minute walk, but I do try to walk the dogs nearly every day (usually just a 10 minute walk to the field at the end of our street and back)! I do this mostly for them, but I sneakily benefit as well. Also, if I’m feeling stressed, anxious, or bored/cooped up at work, I’ll take a quick walk around the block! It’s such a nice way to break up a day full of sitting and staring at a computer. Sometimes I’ll throw in headphones and listen to music or a podcast, or other days I just want some silence away from the office for a few minutes.

Add leafy greens to a meal. My skin and health have improved so much since incorporating more leafy greens into my diet (even though they’re not my favorite to eat in all honesty). Because I don’t love eating spinach on its own, I like to sneak it into my meals. For example, I put a cup of spinach in my morning smoothies, and like to put some in scrambled eggs as well. At lunch and dinner I’ll often make myself a little side salad, and instead of tacos I make taco salad bowls. It’s all about sneaking in your greens when you can!

Park in the furthest parking spot. My dad has done this my whole life, and while I found it bizarre growing up, I now appreciate his eccentric practice! It forces you to move more! However, I do skip this when I’m alone at night :)

Put your phone away a little bit before you go to bed. I used to lay in bed staring at my phone every night, and not only did I get less sleep, but I was probably doing harm to my eyes and my brain as well with all of that blue light. Now, I set my alarm, plug in my phone, and turn it to silent before I even crawl in bed. Then I set it down and don’t look at it anymore, which helps me get to sleep a lot quicker (and have better sleep quality)!

How I'm De-stressing Lately

I've been a stresser for as long as I can remember, and to put it frankly, it succckkkksss. I hate when stress seems to take over me and I can feel my head pounding or heart anxiously beating.

One of my big goals for 2017 was to get better at de-stressing and calming my anxiety, and I really do feel like I've made some progress. I don't think it's something I'll ever completely beat, but I feel like my mind is definitely quieter these last few months. So I wanted to share a few smallish things that have been helping both my mind and body to be less stressed...

Paper + Pen Organization
A couple of years ago I made the transition to using only a Google calendar, since that's what we use at my office. It's definitely efficient and convenient, but I realized recently that I really miss having a physical planner. There is something so soothing to me about writing out what I need to do with pen and paper. It helps me feel more organized, and soothes my mind when I can write things out versus having my to-do list floating around in my head. I ordered a Ban.do planner and it's absolutely perfect! I've been staying organized between work deadlines, blog tasks, and just real life to-dos as well.

Yoga
I know, I know... so cliche. But getting back into yoga has helped me so incredibly much. I finally found an amazing yoga instructor where we live, and I leave each class feeling both stronger and calmer. I love that I can shut off my mind for an entire hour and just focus on connecting with my body. After owning my previous Target yoga mat for 10 years (seriously!) I treated myself to one of these mats, but also want to try this one.

More Water
I recently started drinking over 100oz of water a day, for reasons completely aside from stress, but by accident I've found that I feel better than ever and that it's helped my anxiety so much! I feel like by better hydrating myself, my mind and body feel so much more calm and healthy. As a result, I've also been drinking hardly any caffeine, which has also reduced my anxiety. I find I drink so much more water when I use one of my Corkcicle tumblers + these straws!

When Lulu's sent me this dress, I was so so excited because I love red floral prints, and because I love anything by Moon River! Over the past year, Moon River has easily become one of my favorite brands for beautiful and unique pieces (i.e. the to-die-for ruffles on this dress)! Hands down my favorite places to shop for Moon River are Lulus and Shopbop

Healthy breakfast / Nourish Cafe in Columbia, MO

These are the last of the photos I shot with my bestie Jo (Jo Johnson Photography) on our little girls weekend to Columbia several weeks ago (view the other posts here and here). It was absolutely pouring that day, so we improvised with indoor photos, and ate a delicious brunch at a healthy + photogenic restaurant called Nourish Cafe.

This little Moon River top is Jo's, but I've been thinking about buying it for myself ever since! It's breezy and relaxed, and the details are so pretty.

Today we are headed home from our Virginia + DC trip, and I can't wait to snuggle with my little furries in our own bed! I love and live for traveling, but at the same time... there's no place like home :)

I'll have a few travel related posts coming your way soon, including "a weekend in DC" and my travel essentials/vacation packing list!
